I get it, we are worried about people taking over our cultural and destroying it, namely the sexism that has taken over most media. However, we already have that (see my previous post). And while we might not like it, teenagers “pretending” to be nerds will not hurt anything. If they are pretending, it’s probably just a phase that will fade out. If it’s not, they probably have some genuine interest in our cultural down deep. Our job is to nurture that interest and show them new things; show them that it’s more fun to actually play the game, read the book, or watch the anime than just pretend to like it.
We should embrace these people who think it’s cool to be us! Look at us! We have become the “cool” people. I myself find that just too amusing. Let’s be mature about it, and use this opportunity to broaden everyone’s perceptions. So, stop excluding and start embracing! There ARE no gatekeepers to our hobby. Come one, come all, stop by and play a game :)
In case you were not aware of “fake geek girls” like myself, I highly recommend this article: Serious props to that author.
I also have a video for you to watch (see below) about sharing our cultural with others from (surprise) Extra Credits.
Finally, if you need some comic relief after my rant, please enjoy the comics from DorkTower and PennyArcade on the subject.
