Change the Equation
Change The Equation is a non-partisan non-profit organized by the business community to improve STEM education. They provide three goals on their website:
- Improving Philanthropy--Increase the impact of corporate philanthropy by emphasizing high quality, scalable programs.
- Inspiring Youth—Capture the imagination of young people, giving them a solid foundation in STEM and insight into the unlimited postsecondary and career options.
- Advocating Change—Promote proven state policies and research-based practices that enhance student mastery of and interest in STEM disciplines.
Digital Promise
As expressed by their website, “Digital Promise is a bipartisan independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation authorized by Congress to support a comprehensive research and development program to harness the increasing capacity of advanced information and digital technologies to improve all levels of learning and education, formal and informal, in order to provide Americans with the knowledge and skills needed to compete in the global economy.” They have two initiatives:
1. League of Innovative School: This program brings together districts and schools who are utilizing technology and education innovation. They aim to find out what works and what doesn’t and provide information to the market about what education buyers are looking for.
2. Digital Promise Fellowship Program: This program aims to bring together innovators to improve education technology and learning methods.

GameDesk
GameDesk is an nonprofit organization created to develop a “next generation” model of education, revolutionizing the way we teach and learn. They have many impressive projects such as the Playmaker School and Dojo game that targets urban high school students, drop-outs, and youth within or coming out of the juvenile justice system. GameDesk is "a research, game development, and outreach organization that has evolved out of seven years of research at the University of Southern California." They have some really great projects that you should definitely check out. The organization specifically targets low socioeconomic students that are low-proficient in STEM learning.
Games for Change
Games for Change is a non-profit corporation that encourages and produces games for social good. They hold competitions for game designers to create games that encourage education, social change, collaboration, or community values. They also highlight best practices and invest in projects. Games for Change brings together many stakeholders and fosters collaboration between game designers, innovators, researchers, and educators. Check out their large archive of games to try out! One of the board directors is Jane McGonigal, a well-known leader and proponent of games for social change; you check check her out on the Leaders and Innovators page.
Institute for the Future
Institute for the Future is an independent nonprofit group that works with other organizations to make predictions about the future. They are particularly focused on global business trends, healthcare, technology, living standards, and the consumer society. They have several articles on games for social change and are the creators of SuperStruct and Catalysts for Change.
Joan Ganz Cooney Center
The Sesame Workshop hosts the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, which focuses on advancing children's learning in the digital age. According to their website, "The Cooney Center is an independent research and innovation lab that catalyzes and supports research, development, and investment in digital media technologies to advance children's learning. The focus of The Cooney Center is on literacy development for diverse learners." They specifically focus on STEM subjects. They have several publications, but I would recommend this one.
PBS also has a segment called Digital_Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier. It talks about everything from virtual worlds, to learning, to relationships, to improving living standards. It has a segment designated to game-based learning with several interviews and articles.
